En 2012 la Universidad Técnica de Riga celebrará su 150 aniversario.
El 14 de octubre de 1862, día en que los primeros estudiantes del Politécnico de Riga empezaron sus estudios, es considerado como el día de la fundación de la Universidad. El Politécnico de Riga fue la primera escuela politécnica de estudios superiores, no sólo en Letonia, sino en todo el Imperio Ruso de aquella época.
La Universidad Politécnica de Riga fue creada, principalmente, a imagen y semejanza de las universidades de Suiza y de Alemania. Entre los docentes del Politécnico de Riga también trabajaban científicos alemanes, suizos y austríacos; se fomentó la cooperación con otras universidades europeas y otras instituciones, adquiriendo la experiencia tanto de Europa, como del resto del mundo.
Para el trabajo docente en Riga se logró atraer también a científicos famosos de la Europa Occidental: el físico-químico W. Ostwald, más tarde Premio Nobel; W. Ritter, más tarde Rector del Instituto Politécnico de Zúrich; eldocente E. Hoyer, más tarde Rector de la Universidad Técnica de Múnich; E. Laspeyres, uno de los economistas alemanes más conocidos de la época; E. Arnold, uno de los fundadores de la construcción de maquinaria eléctrica a nivel mundial y, más tarde, Rector de la Universidad Técnica de Karlsruhe; así como a otras personas relevantes de la época.
Hoy en día la Universidad Técnica de Riga se ha convertido en una universidad moderna y de prestigio internacional.
